A year round program designed to demonstrate improvement in all types of physical and mental health, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities over the age of 21, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, friendships, confidence in self, sense of accomplishment, and an opportunity to travel and to compete. These activities help maintain good physical and mental health. The activities demonstrates one’s talents, promotes dignity and value. It is a dream come true for many persons with disabilities to participate in sports activities just like their non-disabled peers.
Currently 45 individuals participate in The Arc of Southwest Georgia Special Olympics Program. The program can grow as more resources are available to support the program. The target population is from the southwest Georgia geographical area. The individuals are from all ethnicities and they are all adults ranging from the age of 21-65. Many persons with disabilities need assistance to lose weight, improve agility, lower blood pressure, increase posture and balance
